No War For

Peace is not the reward that we receive once we've vanquished all our enemies. No matter how much we want justice, revenge, security or freedom and no matter how justified our anger we must resist the shortcut of violence. We live with the proof that peace works, that women and African-Americans in the United States can vote and own land, that India was freed from British colonialism, and that the Berlin Wall no longer stands. We also see all around us the disastrous results of a philosophy that says that violence driven by moral outrage is justified, the 9/11 attacks by religious fundamentalists; the chaos in Iraq and Afghanistan; the violence wreaked by revolutionaries worldwide whose lasting legacy will be that they replaced one tyranny with another.
